Kabir Singh is an upcoming Bollywood movie starring Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani. The movie is directed by Sandeep Vanga and is based on his Telegu film Arjun Reddy (2017). The movie is set to be released on 21 June 2019.
The story portrays ‘a brilliant yet impulsive surgeon’ named Kabir Singh, who falls into a path of self-destruction when the love of his life is coerced into marriage with another man.
Development
Director and writer Sandeep Vanga wanted to make a Hindi remake of his 2017 film Arjun Reddy after the immense success of the film. He originally wanted to see Ranveer Singh in the role of Kabir Singh. However, it didn’t work out. He then wanted to cast Shahid Kapoor as the lead. However, the remake rights for Arjun Reddy were in the hands of Murad Khetani and Ashwin Varde of Cine1 Studios, who wanted to see Arjun Kapoor in the lead role.
Sandeep Vanga seemed quite disappointed when he said: “I’ve come to know that the remake rights of Arjun Reddy have been sold and it would star Arjun Kapoor. I am caught in a dilemma, as I’ve already locked Shahid for the role. It’s a very embarrassing situation for me. I don’t know how I’ll face Shahid.” Despite all this, In April 2018, it was announced that Shahid Kapoor will be starring with Sandeep Vanga returning as a director.
Sandeep Vanga even spoke about the sense of freedom he’ll get while working in Bollywood. He stated “When I made Arjun Reddy, I wasn’t sure where to draw the line in terms of representation of certain things. I don’t think I’d have to restrict myself when it comes to the Hindi version. I believe I’ll have more freedom in Bollywood.”
The Cast
Kiara Advani plays the female lead. The role was initially offered to Tara Sutaria. Sandeep Vanga praised Kiara Advani and sad that she epitomizes the female character in the film. The lead role will be played by Shahid Kapoor; he is a man who is set on a path of self-destruction, abusing alcohol and drugs after the love of his life is forced to marry someone else. Kabir Singh is portrayed (in the trailer) as a very stubborn and angry young surgeon. Shahid Kapoor will be seen drinking, smoking, taking hits from a bong, etc. in this movie. A kind of role which he has already shown he can pull off with excellence, in his 2016 movie Udta Punjab. Arjan Bajwa was hesitant to play the male lead’s older brother, however, he accepted after Sandeep Vanga insisted as he only wanted him to play the character. The role of Amit (as in the Telugu movie) will be played by the same actor, Amit Sharma.
Soundtrack
As of now, only one song ‘Bekhayali’ from the film has been released. The soundtrack of this film is composed by Mithoon, Amaal Mallik, Vishal Mishra and Sachet-Parampara with lyrics written by Irshad Kamil. The track was released a few days ago and has already amassed 21M views on YouTube. Fans are eagerly waiting for the film to hit the theatres.
Fun Fact: Kabir Singh will be the first Bollywood movie to have it’s very own theatre. Over 15 PVR theatres in 15 cities across India will be renamed as ‘Kabir Singh Ka Theatre’.
The Trailer
The trailer was released on 13 May 2019 and has amassed almost 45M views on YouTube thus far. The trailer seems promising and has filled the fans with excitement. Everyone is eagerly waiting for the release date i.e. Friday (21 June 2019) to experience the story of Kabir Singh. Whether the movie will meet our expectations or not, is another story.
