As earlier predicted in exit polls, Modi-led NDA has claimed a whopping 350 seats in the 17th Lok Sabha elections. BJP now becomes the single largest mandated party, securing over 300 seats in the 17th Lok Sabha elections.
It has almost clean swept the entire Hindi heartland belt, consisting of states like Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Undoubtedly, it’s a historic moment for the winning party and Indian politics.
There are certainly many more things to be talked about, but let’s first analyse the BJP’s stupendous victory in one of the key states of Hindi lands — Delhi. The right-wing victorious party has already clean swept the entire state, thus retaining all the seven seats won in 16th LS elections. While the Congress and AAP almost stood incompetent in front of BJP’s mammoth victory in the state. Earlier there were speculations about Congress and AAP’s alliance and a possible defeat of BJP in the state. Ultimately, it didn’t happen, which in turn led to several counter conjectures or presumptions of a clean sweep by the party, and it did happen. But if we analyze the total votes secured by the parties, we’ll arrive at the conclusion that even if the alliance would have happened, it still might not have been enough to topple down the massive upsurge of BJP.
Here is data of the total votes secured by candidates of three majorly voted parties in all seven Lok Sabha constituencies of Delhi:
Chandni Chowk:
Harsh Vardhan (BJP) – 5,19,055
Jai Prakash Agarwal (INC) – 2,90,910
Pankaj Kumar Gupta (AAP) – 1,44,447
East Delhi:
Gautam Gambhir (BJP) – 6,96,156
Arvinder Singh Lovely (INC) – 3,04,934
Atishi Marlena (AAP) – 2,19,328
New Delhi:
Meenakshi Lekhi (BJP) – 5,04,206
Ajay Maken (INC) – 2,47,702
Brijesh Goyal (AAP):- 1,50,342
North East Delhi:
Manoj Tiwari (BJP) – 7,87,799
Shiela Dixit (INC) – 4,21,697
Dilip Pandey (AAP) – 1,90,856
North West Delhi:
Hans Raj Hans (BJP) – 8,48,663
Rajesh Lilothia (INC) – 2,36,882
Gugan Singh (AAP) – 2,94,766
South Delhi:
Ramesh Bidhuri (BJP) – 6,87,014
Vijender Singh (INC) – 1,64,613
Raghav Chadha (AAP) – 3,19,977
West Delhi:
Parvesh Singh (BJP) – 8,65,648
Mahabal Mishra (INC) – 2,87,162
Balbir Singh Jakhar (AAP) – 2,51,873
It’s evident that BJP has won all the seats with quite a good margin. In the West Delhi constituency, the margin is even larger and more significant. While factually, Congress and AAP can be seen as parties in competition with the BJP, the numbers themselves say that they’re rather irrelevant and incompetent in front of BJP’s thumping mandate.
On the other hand, the Congress party’s promotion to number 2 could definitely be seen as a warning to AAP, which will seek for another term in the upcoming Delhi state assembly elections due in 2020. Only Raghav Chadha has been able to garner the 2nd spot from AAP, that too in the South Delhi constituency, defeating Vijendra Singh(INC) by a good margin while the West Delhi constituency has been a tough fight for a mere 2nd position between the Congress party’s Mahabal and AAP’s Balbir Jakhar. But it’s definitely a no-brainer to arrive at the conclusion that AAP has failed miserably in the LS elections despite fielding decent candidates in the fight.
Well, it’s pretty evident from the data that even an alliance would not have stopped BJP from claiming victory in any of the constituencies. Instead, a vicious polarisation effect could have erupted if the alliance would have formulated successfully. Maybe the situation would have worsened due to polarisation, which in turn, could have brought even stronger backlashes to the alliance in the form of an even lower mandate.
It looks pretty obvious now; we are actually witnessing an invincible and unstoppable saffron tsunami led by Modi and Shah which has almost wiped the Opposition out of the scenario and left it in tatters.
