“Was it really my fault? ” asked the short skirt. “No, it happened with me too,” replied the burqa.
Welcome to the society which claims to fight for equality and feminism. All it needed was a Dilli ki aunty to bust that myth.
Wow! It’s hard to process that India is still plagued by such people. This incident went viral on Instagram, where a group of girls, who were verbally attacked by this woman, shared videos instantly. A middle-aged woman can clearly be heard saying that revealing dresses are the cause of rape and girls who wear short dresses ‘invite rapists’. She even had the audacity to say, “Are not you ashamed that men are looking at your thighs?”
The video went viral on Instagram and was even supported by popular YouTuber, Dolly Singh (Instagram:@spill_the_sass) and Ashi Khanna, of Tik Tok fame.
While social media has proven to be a means to reach people in large numbers, the video was removed by Instagram overnight, stating that it breaches the community guidelines. Way to go, Instagram!
This is only one such instance that got viral. I’m certain this happens only a daily basis to thousands of other girls, by thousands of people with a mentality as sick as this woman’s.
It’s just sad that we are still being judged, for what we wear, for what we say, for where we go and who we go out with. Trust me, it’s not just the men around us who letch at us, it’s also the women around us who have been making things worse for other women.
More often than not, we choose to ignore such incidents, but till when will ignorance be bliss?
Delhi continues to live up to its image of being the rape capital of India, and we can’t just blame men for that, but also women like this aunty.
