A winter night. Trust in her companion, of not letting her be uncomfortable.
Both of them were out for a movie night, and never even in her worst nightmare did she anticipate what was to happen.
It was an obvious choice to use public transport. They were however, unknowing of the pain, wounds and death that was to come.
Those four boys not only killed Nirbhaya, but also killed the confidence of every parent who has a daughter, they killed the dreams of the country’s precious gems, who happen to share their gender with Nirbhaya.
That cruel act was done by them just to satisfy their fire. They beat her friend, till he could only crawl for movement. In between, the scars they were painting on her body were going to get tattooed on society very soon.
It ceased to be an easy night for the two friends. They were thrown out of the bus, beaten, and their ambitions and dreams crumbled.
None of the passersby stopped to help her. Her bare body was covered only with blood. Her friend was trying his best to get her some help while she was still conscious.
She regained her consciousness on a bed with blue sheets, looking round she could only find her mother sitting beside her and crying.
Her last words were filled with a zest for life.
That’s how our Nirbhaya was: brave, confident, and strong!
It’s not just about the men who did what they did to her, it’s also about our society that allowed this incident to take place. Instead of asking girls to sit properly in public saying “log dekh rahe hain, sahi se baitho” (people are looking, sit properly), they should ask the boys to respect girls, and accept the no as no.
That’s what we’re lacking as a people. And because we refuse to change, lives are lost and dreams remain unfulfilled.
