The jolt given by China to the international community in UNSC(United Nations Security Council) is extremely disquieting. It is the fourth time that China has blocked the proposal at the United Nations to designate Jaish-e-Mohammad chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist. India expressed disappointment over the outcome.
“We are disappointed by this outcome. This has prevented action by the international community to designate the leader of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), a prescribed and active terrorist organization which has claimed responsibility for the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir on February 14,” the MEA said.
It seems as if Pakistan and China as all-weather friends, the reality, however, is quite different. The main reason for vetoing the proposal is the vested economic interests of China in Pakistan.
Firstly, Pakistan is the largest importer of Chinese arms. Secondly, the terrorist organizations like Jaish- e- Mohammad, Lashkar-e-Taiba and Taliban may end up creating major hurdles in the ongoing China Pakistan Economic Project (CPEC), if China takes a stand against them. So, in spite of international pressure, the country keeps sabotaging the efforts of India in the UN.
However, the repercussions of this action can be detrimental to China in the future as the whole world is gradually getting united to fight against terrorism. This step can also bolster the confidence of JEM which in turn can trigger a series of attacks inside and outside India.
But how can India grapple with the increasing dominance of China in the new global order? In this regard strategic policies of former American President Barack Obama to counter the influence on China were relevant to some extent.
As of now, India should focus on a multilateral military exercise like Malabar, RIMPAC etc to strengthen ties with powerful countries, in order to contain the belligerence of the two neighbouring countries. If China is dealt with, Pakistan will automatically crumble under the pressure.
