The day of February 27, 2019, began with a tumultuous morning, as Pakistan’s Fighter jets crossed over to the Indian side of the Line of Control (LOC) with the intent of hitting military establishments in the Rajouri-Naushera sector in Jammu-Kashmir. The bombs, however, missed the targets, and the Pakistani planes were chased back by the Indian Air Force. Unfortunately, in the aerial skirmish, Indian Mig 21 was shot down and the pilot-Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman was captured by the Pakistani Forces.

Despite the escalating tension between the two countries, the top echelons of BJP remained occupied with their regular political engagements. Home Minister Rajnath Singh, was busy in Bilaspur, Chattisgarh, exhorting party workers to work hard to help the saffron party win the upcoming Lok Sabha election scheduled for summer 2019. BJP workers, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi, spent his evening taking a metro ride to inaugurate the world’s biggest Bhagwat Gita at Delhi’s ISKCON temple.

Today PM Modi will also be interacting with over one crore BJP workers and volunteers from 15,000 locations across the country in what the twitter handle of the party claimed would be the “world’s largest video conference“. Moreover, the former Chief Minister and Karnataka BJP chief BS Yeddyurappa on Wednesday went to the extent of brazenly saying that the preemptive strikes carried out in Pakistan will help the party in securing more than 22 seats in the upcoming general elections.

For the first time in forty years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s bravery has resulted in Pakistan learning a lesson,” Yeddyurappa, said in Chitradurga. “When 42 of our soldiers were martyred, PM Modi had said he would exact revenge for the deaths of each soldier. With the preemptive strike, he has kept his promise.

In the afternoon of February 27, 2019, 21 opposition parties held a meeting to discuss the escalation of hostilities between the two countries and accused the “leaders of the ruling party” for “blatant politicization of the sacrifices of the armed forces“.

The National Conference leader Omar Abdullah said that Prime Minister should cancel all his political activities, till the captured pilot returns back home safely. In a series of tweets Mr, Abdullah said “PM Modi must suspend his political activities until #WingCommanderAbhinandan is returned safely. It can’t be business as usual with him crisscrossing the country at taxpayer expense making political speeches while our pilot is a Pakistani captive,”.

The BJP leaders defended their stance and told NDTV that changing the schedule of the Prime Minister and other senior leaders of the party at this point would only help terrorists’ designs to disrupt the democratic process of the country.

The misplaced priorities of the country’s ruling party have prompted concerns that amid the heightened possibilities of another India-Pakistan war, the leaders are still busy in their regular electoral gimmicks. Even though the Prime Minister Of Pakistan Imran Khan officially confirmed the  IAF’s officer custody, the Indian Government hasn’t yet made any official statement on its further plan of action. Prime Minister Narendra Modi last tweet was of a video of his speech at the National Youth Parliament Festival.
