If I’m ‘Debauched’, What Are You?

R

Some of you may think that being a girl is awesome, that we are given a payback everywhere, that we have an indubitable power over everybody, especially men. And sometimes I have also heard boys say, “You are a girl, it’s much easier for you”. If that’s what you think my dear, then you are living in a totally ignorant and erroneous world. And trust me, whatever I say is based on my own experience. Do you have any idea of how much it hurts to hear your mother or guardian say, “You are a girl and girls have to suffer”? If in your neighbourhood a guy comments on you or throws a remark at you, it is not considered ‘HIS’ fault but it will be ‘YOURS’. You will be given the title of a ‘DEBAUCHED’ girl. You, who have absolutely no idea of who that boy is; you, who have never seen his face before; you, who don’t fret over any boy, will be given that title. If a guy is staring at your legs, it’s your leg’s fault. (I mean we shouldn’t have legs, is that what are you saying?)

It’s even worse if you are a girl who is an open-minded activist. If you talk to a lot of boys and you openly laugh and crack jokes with them, you are the nastiest kind of a girl. Why? A very simple question I want to ask is, why are boys not criticized? Just because they are boys, they are bestowed upon with a privilege and license of doing ‘whatever’. Is that so? A girl cannot wear short clothes because boys would stare at her. Really? And nobody will forbid or proscribe boys for staring, but the girl who is wearing will be carped and censured. And then they say it is an act of provoking boys. Don’t you think it is quite insane and dire?

I have faced all of these situations and trust me it’s not fun. It’s not fun when people are censorious and hypercritical. It’s not fun when you are criticized without any reason. It’s not fun when all the people around you, at all times and for all the reasons are demanding of you to be wary. It’s not fun when you are just being yourself and people muddle it up. It’s not fun when a group of boys laughs at you when you pass by. It’s not always fun being a girl. NO, IT’S NOT!

And trust me wherever I gave this article, to print it in the magazine or other platforms, I always got one answer ”nice words but too bold to be printed”. And I never felt bad because, fellas, ‘GIRLS’ can’t be candid and nervy, that’s unaffordable for our patriarchal society. And being a girl, I have been deprived of many things, so not being able to get this article printed probably wouldn’t affect me a bit. But I would seriously be gratified if somebody shows the guts to give this voice a platform.
