Why do young Indian men in cities not wear dhotis, lungis in their day to day life? Why do most guys wear trousers and shirts?
Most of them want to appear ‘modern’, be fashionable. They also say that dhotis are so uncomfortable and that pants are much better. Imagine an Indian guy entering a room full of people in a board meeting while wearing a kurta and dhoti! After all, dhotis are a part of our culture, no? Doesn’t it mean that the men follow western culture so much more?
But when a woman says that she doesn’t like wearing a saree all the time, she’s told about how so many women, even foreigners like Indian outfits. It is so sanskari also.
Why do only Indian women have to follow Indian culture? There is no concept of choice for women.
I am an Indian and to me, a saree is the most beautiful style of feminine dress.
The modern society is now changing the style of women’s clothing. Saree’s are still being worn in a wide section of mature and traditional women, however, the modern women are limiting the use of sari for special occasions only. The reasons for the lesser use of sarees are mainly the high cost of buying, high cost of maintenance, difficult to wear and manage.
Everyone now likes to wear jeans, trousers, t-shirts, western style dresses and other clothes, no doubt they are smart looking. And everyone now is in the competition of looking more and more attractive, which is not wrong, in a way.
