Before we begin, we would just like to mention a few things. This article is not to defame any school. This article is only an attempt to change how the society thinks, or if that seems too far-fetched, it is only to reason with how we are raised. How we are raising boys and if that would help to turn them into decent and respectable men.
What caught our attention were posts after posts about what happened in DPS Rohini, by the alumni and the existing students. This happened in a school we were extremely proud of. But what happened on one assembly morning, might have been normal, for all schools probably, but not for us. Not anymore.
To give you a brief, here are the series of events that ensued.
Now, what you read above is annoying on many levels. In our opinion, it should have been the boys in that assembly. They should have been lectured on how to behave with girls, how to respect them, how to not make a big deal about their bra strap showing.
But let’s talk about how this mentality works, what the older generation must have thought at the time – boys will be boys. So let’s control what we can, let’s tell the girls what they should or should not wear, let’s ask them to wear three layers of clothing in scorching heat just so that boys don’t get ‘distracted’.
We know where you guys are coming from, we know that this, according to you, is a bid to protect girls who are probably dressed in a way you’ve never seen, but if it’s up to boys to wear what they want to, shouldn’t girls be treated the same?
Regulations should apply to all sexes regardless, right? So, if you’re offended by a colourful bra, that maybe the only one that girl found to be so comfortable, we really don’t care. It’s your problem.
Tell us something, if you tell boys at this age there is an appropriate way for the girls to dress and anything apart from that is wrong, what are they going to grow up thinking? How are they going to raise their daughters?
The carousel will never stop turning then. We’ll keep teaching boys about the same sexist stuff that we are not supposed to, they are going to keep teaching their sons the same things, and they are going to keep imposing regulations on their daughters.
It might not seem like a big deal to you. It’s a big deal for us. We know this happens in all schools in India, and the world. This needs to stop somewhere. Somebody needs to speak up.
