What is a Professional Year Program (PYP)?
PYPs are basically structured professional development program. They make you to ‘learn’ how to ‘earn’ in an Australian manner.
It is also called the ‘Job Preparedness Program’. It is designed by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP), now monitored by the Department of Home Affairs (DHA), exclusively for international students who intend to migrate to Australia for studying and working. Such students who have graduated from a university in Australia can enhance their ability for obtaining employment in their chosen discipline with the application of technical skills and knowledge in the workplace and culture of Australia.

Streams Courses and Duration
The following professional year programs are currently recognized by the Government of Australia
- Accounting: SMIPA (Skilled Migration Internship Program)
- Computer Science
- Engineering
Duration is 12 months or 44 weeks, out of which 12 weeks are allocated for internship.
SMIPA Adelaide
Skilled Migration Internship Program: Accounting( SMIPA) is a Professional Year Program which is approved by the Department of Home Affairs and is available for international students who have an Australian accounting degree qualification, after studying for two years in Australia. SMIPA Adelaide has the following features
- 44 weeks training that includes an internship placement with a related host company
- Practical hands-on learning and professional development, emphasizing on preparation for work place ethics, culture and expectations
- A pathway for 485 visa holders who intend to obtain Permanent Residency (PR) under General Skilled Migration (GSM)
Eligibility Criteria
- A recognized accounting degree that provides a minimum of 2 years of credit points and the course must have been completed over a minimum duration of 3 year
- You must be holder of or have applied for Temporary Graduate visa under subclass 485 with a minimum validity of 12 months
- In proof of proficiency in English language, you must have an overall score of 5 in IELTs with a minimum score of each band or a minimum score of 50 in PTE academic exam
- You must provide a valid Skill assessment from a professional year accounting Perth

You can get yourself enrolled in any of the above accounting bodies, independent of your participation in SMIPA Adelaide or any other pathways for getting PR, approved by the DHA. You can get SMIPA facilities on at the registered service providers and not through any of the above 3 professional bodies.
