Menstrual Hygiene Day, marked on 28 May, saw much social media buzz around menstrual cups – a relatively new feminine hygiene product. But what are they and should you try them? Here’s our quick primer…
Menstrual cups are a safe, hygienic and reusable sanitary product that come in a variety of forms and sizes to suit various body types. However, like anything else, you must choose what’s comfortable for your body. Here are some key facts to help you decide.
- Menstrual cups are bell-shaped, flexible silicone or rubber cups that need to be inserted into the vagina during menstruation.
- They collect the menstrual flow instead of absorbing it like tampons or pads do.
- Unlike pads and tampons, menstrual cups are mostly reusable though there are disposable varieties as well.
- For women with regular flow, menstrual cups can last for up to 12 hours before emptying.
- Since menstrual cups only collect the menstrual flow and do not absorb it, chances of an infection and Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) are usually low.
- Unlike tampons, which absorb vaginal fluids along with the blood and thus may disturb the delicate pH and bacterial balance in your vagina, menstrual cups only collect menstrual fluid keeping other vaginal fluids intact.
- Since menstrual cups do not need to be changed/emptied frequently, you can sleep with it in.
- Being reusable, menstrual cups are better for the environment and work out cheaper in the long run.
- Menstrual cups are easy to maintain and can be reused after simple sterilization at home using boiling water.
- With proper care and cleaning, a menstrual cup can last for up to 10 years.
