5 Unstoppable Figures Who’re Shutting Down Those Who Limit Them To Their Disability

Whenever we come across a person with disability, many tend to look at them with a sense of pity. We think of the difficulties they might have to face. We tend to think of the things they can’t do and wonder about their career options. However, there are many Indians who have got fame and popularity in the career options that they have chosen that many thought would not be suitable for them. Their stories are of courage and determination and they are an inspiration to all who want to achieve their goals.

1. Sudha Chandran – Dancer

She was only 17-years-old and an aspiring dancer when she met with an accident due to which her left leg had to be amputated. Before the accident, she was practising hard and was performing at dance shows in various countries. Many thought that that would mark the end of her career in dancing. However, her dedication and passion got her back to dancing and that too on the national level. Soon after the accident, she started practising with the help of a Jaipur foot and became adept at dancing again. She is seen as an inspiration to many young dancers. Now, she is a renowned Bharatnatyam dancer and also a popular TV actress. She has performed in numerous countries across the Americas, Europe and the Middle East. She has even established a dance academy where she encourages young students to explore their career in dance.

2. Arunima Sinha – Mountain Climber

In 2011, it became a sensational news when a national-level volleyball and football player was thrown out of a train by some hoodlums. She lost her left leg in the unfortunate incident and could not pursue the career in any of the above games. But she never lost her sportsmanship and staged a comeback when she climbed Mount Everest with her artificial foot. In 2013, she became India’s first amputee to conquer the difficult terrain of Mount Everest. To help other people with disabilites live life with courage and determination, she has also set up a sports academy named the Shaheed Chandra Shekhar Azad Viklaang Khel Academy which helps them in their social and physical development.

3. Girish Sharma – Badminton Player

He lost a leg when he was only two-years-old. He decided to pursue a career of his choice and defied all odds and came out as a champion. According to him, he used to play with children around him when he was young and he never realised his disability. It was only when he grew older, he started hearing from people around him about the things that he supposedly won’t be able to do. At that time, he decided to pursue a career in the field of his preference. He has won a gold medal in the Paralympic Asia cup which was held in India.

4. Sadhna Dhand – Painter

She suffered from a brittle bone disease at birth and it restricted her growth. She had more than 80 bone fractures in 55 years and had lost her hearing at the age of 12. Since then, she has become an expert at art and in paintings which have been recognised in various countries. She has also been awarded by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in the year 2012 with the Role Model Award. She runs many exhibitions where people visit to see her artwork. She even encourages many young people to pursue painting as a career and guides them in honing their skills. She has trained over 12,000 students in different art styles and helped them in making art their career.

5. Dr Sudesh Advani

He is a popular oncologist who started Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation in India. He contracted polio when he was eight years old. Since then he has become one of India’s most sought after oncologists. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2002 and Padma Bhushan in 2012.

There are many students who need encouragement and the right career guidance which can help them to choose a career. We need to understand that careers are not bound only by passion and dedication. If a student is dedicated, they can achieve success in any career provided they are guided in the right direction by the right mentor.
