On June 13, American-born Omar Mateen opened fire at the gay bar Pulse in Orlando, killing 49 and injuring many others. This attack is being seen as the deadliest mass shooting in US history, one specifically targeted at the LGBTQ+ community.
Solidarity messages for the victims have been pouring in from across the world, including India. But for LGBTQ+ Indians, with the archaic Section 377 still in place, being open and free about their sexuality still carries a criminal threat, and one that the State is behind.
