By YKA Staff:
The world’s largest democracy, India, has over 2.68 crore citizens living with disabilities (2011 census). Yet, in our 69th year of independence, most of them have little access to education, jobs, transportation systems, public spaces and other spheres of life. Something that is theirs by right.
In a move to bring about greater awareness on this issue, CBM India, a leading disability and development organisation in partnership with Youth Ki Awaaz, recently launched the #Access4All campaign. The aim being to push for accessibility interventions across the board.
To take this conversation one step further, to the policy makers themselves, we hosted a Twitter chat with the Accessible India Campaign, launched by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in December 2015. The uniquely designed AwaazChat held on June 9, 2016, saw overwhelming participation, both by individuals and organisations, to raise questions as well as offer solutions on how to make India more accessible for all. The enthusiasm was such that it captured national attention and the chat was soon trending on Twitter. Just goes to show that if you have the right conversation, there is no dearth of people wanting to take part and engage with it!
