Considered as ‘Laureate of American Lowlife’, Henry Charles Bukowski was a German-born American poet who spoke about lives of poor Americans and drudgery of daily routine through poetry and short stories.
In 1999, British animator Jonathan Hodgson and illustrator Jonny Hannah came together to visually translate Charles Bukowski’s poem ‘The Man with the Beautiful Eyes’. Taken from Charles Bukowski’s final poetry collection ‘The Last Night of the Earth’, The man with the ‘Beautiful Eyes’ follows a gang of children who discover an old house surrounded by an overgrown garden. Despite being warned by their parents, they go closer to the house where they find a ‘drunk beat’ alcoholic who in contrast to their parent’s description seems to be a free and easy spirit.
