On February 2, the Supreme Court of India will hear a curative petition regarding its own judgement regarding Section 377. This is the same law that infringes upon the right of the LGBT+ community and criminalises homosexuality in India. And the worst part? It was enforced in 1860, at the time of the British colonization of India and is largely regarded as a ‘British ka bojha‘ or ‘Burden of the British’.
As we hope that the SC does away with this regressive, discriminatory law and upholds one’s freedom of expression and right to identity, we’re sharing the powerful voice of ‘Dadi’ Rani Sharma. A senior citizen whose grandson is gay, Dadi’s voice rings loud and clear in support of equality. “Kaun kehta hai criminal? (Who calls them criminals?)” asks Dadi fiercely, challenging Section 377. Supreme Court, we hope you’re listening.
