With 246.5 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours, [envoke_twitter_link]Chennai has drowned in what can be said to be its worst flood crisis since 2005[/envoke_twitter_link]. 79 people have already perished in rain-related incidents across Tamil Nadu and according to recent Meteorological (Met) reports, Chennai is going to receive more rain in the next 24 hours.
The Met department had alerted the Tamil Nadu government of above normal rainfall in September itself, but the Corporations did little to be prepared for the rains. The city has come to a standstill with schools and colleges closed, but the spirit of the people hasn’t been shaken.
People fearlessly got out onto the streets to help animals and the elderly, some students even rowed a boat to reach their examination centre! Ola cabs launched a boat service with professional rowers to rescue people for free from waterlogged areas to safer places. Here’s hoping that Chennai recovers soon from this massive natural disaster. Concerned individuals have shared the following helpline numbers for Chennai residents:
Tree fall, waterlogging: 1913
Sewage overflow: 45674567
Blue cross: 9176025265
