In September 2014, AIADMK chief, Ms. Jayalalitha, ‘Amma‘ to her supporters, was convicted in a case of disproportionate assets. Her salary as CM of Tamil Nadu between between 1991 and 1996 was Re 1/month but in 1996 she had amassed wealth of the order of Rs 66 crore, which in addition to her belongings in terms of clothes, gold and silver made a case for the prosecution. On May 11th 2015 however, the Karnataka High Court acquitted her of all charges. But the whiff of suspicion remains.
