Considering Law As A Career Option?

If you are a good orator and can really convince people with your strong arguments, the career in judiciary and law may be a perfect choice for you. Gone are those days when this career was deemed unfit for women and “men in black coat” faced never-ending struggle to make their ends meet. Today law has emerged as one of the ever-expanding discipline entailing plethora of opportunities in both private and public sector. With Indian Legal Service being introduced and private firms offering lucrative jobs to legal experts, the opportunities in this sector have only widened.

One can choose to work for legal firms or practice independently as a lawyer. Working for legal wing of non-governmental organization is also option taking into account the proliferation of NGO activities and widespread engagement in socio-political issues. Judicial Service is a perfect choice for those, patient enough to put in extra efforts.

An All India level, Common Law Admission Test-UG (CLAT-UG) is a gateway for admission to integrated programs of national law universities throughout the country. The examination is held in April-May every year. The maximum marks are 200 and a candidate is assessed on general knowledge, legal aptitude, logical reasoning, elementary maths and English.

One can also enroll in the three-year law course after graduation. Premier institutions like Delhi University, Benares Hindu University etc. conduct entrances for three-year courses in a pattern similar to CLAT.

Since gaining hands-on experience is indispensable to any course, one can gain enriching experience by working as an intern. Various legal NGOs, organizations like UNICEF, government bodies like Delhi Legal Services Authority etc. offer internships where one can gain insight about the legal world. Participation in extracurricular activities like legal writing, seminars and legal workshops boosts your prospects in this field.

A law fresher from premiere institution can expect salary starting from 3 lakh per annum to 5 lakh per annum. However, sky is the limit for talented aspirants. So if you are a law aspirant, gear up for challenging yet exciting prospects in legal world.
